Proper leather care requires only a small investment of time, and a few easy steps to keep leather upholstery supple and prevent damage. Otherwise, dirt, grit and grime can discolor surface areas and eventually get down into the sub surface fibers causing cracking, tears and rips.

  1. 1. Vacuum with upholstery attachment once a week.
  2. 2. Use a professional upholstery leather cleaner that penetrates deep into the fiber to remove the dirt and grime that can damage your upholstery and is pH balanced for upholstery leather. (Using the wrong type of cleaning products can also damage your leather upholstery. Some cleaners while suitable for products like saddles and boots, harden the surface of upholstery leather, which then can’t flex and breathe as it should. These cleaners remove some of the surface dye and strip the natural oils, causing cracking. You need a professional leather upholstery cleaner that penetrates deep into the fiber to remove the dirt and grime that can damage your leather and is pH balanced for upholstery leather.

2. Either place furniture away from direct sunlight or use uvSunguard to prevent sun fading.

3. Don’t leave newspapers, or damp or wet jeans on leather upholstery.  They can cause ‘dye transfer’ to occur. That is, the dye from these articles will penetrate the leather and cause stains that are difficult to remove.

4. Blot all spills quickly. Don’t rub them in.

5. Do not use harsh cleaners, chemicals (bleach, acetone)  to remove stains.  Not only will they damage the leather and remove the dye, some chemicals will also leave a barrier on the leather that will make repair and re-dyeing difficult or sometimes even impossible.

6. Test cleaners and conditioners on an inconspicuous spot before use.

7. Watch out for pets. Cat scratches can cause a lot of damage and some dogs like to tear out large pieces of the leather or chew on legs or seat cushions.

  38. Thanks for the tips. Could you recommend some kind of homemade cleaner for a leather sofa?

    • admin says:

You can use a damp cloth on some types of leather. This won’t get the deep stains, or the stains that have set out, but if used right away, will prevent many stains from setting.
